Shady Lane Creative Studios

Set in the heart of East Austin's arts district, Shady Lane Creative Studios is a 64,000-square-foot mixed-use home for the city's makers, startups, and small businesses. Arranged as three light-filled triangles wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glass and perforated sun screens, the building centers on a 9,000-square-foot courtyard that wraps a restored 1920s house—now a restaurant—linking the site's industrial past to its creative present. Steps from a future light rail stop and a 26-acre park, it's a walkable, daylight-filled place built for how Austin's creative community actually works.

Shady Lane Creative Studios (Austin, 2021) treats shadow as a design material, wrapping its floor-to-ceiling glass in perforated metal screens that filter the harsh Texas sun into shifting, dappled patterns. Composed of three right triangles punctured by light wells, the building casts ever-changing lacework across its interiors as the sun moves, letting light and shadow define how the space is experienced.
